Read to Me! Book Selection
Read to Me! is committed to providing families with the very best board books for babies. To ensure we are giving the best books, our book selection committee, a team of experts in the field of children’s literature and development, meets every few years to review new books. Our committee uses a book selection policy to ensure the books are developmentally appropriate and culturally inclusive.
When Selecting Books, Read to Me! Looks For:
- books with rhyme, rhythm and repetition
- books that depict and encourage loving interaction between caregiver and child
- books that are visually stimulating, with bright colours, strong contrast and bold images
- durable board books that can be held, touched and tasted
- books that feature pictures of babies and faces
- books that help babies identify familiar objects
- books that represent wide cultural diversity
Our Current Books
Currently the Read to Me! bag contains three wonderful titles. Pat-a-Cake, published by Monarch Books, is a delightful collection of nursery rhymes illustrated by award-winning artist Annie Kubler. Go, Baby, Go! is part of the “Amazing Baby” series and has bouncy language, beautiful photos of babies, and a place for families to put a photo of their own little star. Sheree Fitch’s book Kisses, Kisses Baby-O! is a home-grown treasure and is the very first Nova Scotian board books for babies. It is provided to Read to Me! in partnership by the Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union and the Nova Scotia Teachers Union.
